If you’ve ever dreamed of creating your own children’s picture book, one of the first questions you’re probably asking is:

How much does it cost to self-publish a children’s picture book?

The answer depends largely on how much of the work you do yourself.

For authors wondering how much it costs to self-publish a children’s picture book on Amazon KDP, the total expense can range from under $30 to several thousand dollars depending on whether you create the illustrations, formatting, and cover design yourself.

When I created my picture book Where Do Pirates Poop?, I handled the writing, illustrations, formatting, and publishing myself. Because I already had access to many of the tools I needed, my costs were surprisingly low.

In this article, I’ll break down the major expenses involved in self-publishing a children’s picture book and share how independent authors can keep costs under control.

The Good News About Self-Publishing

Years ago, publishing a children’s book often required hiring a publisher, illustrator, designer, and printer.

Today, independent authors have more options than ever.

With tools like Canva, Procreate, and Amazon KDP, it’s possible to create and publish a professional-looking children’s picture book without spending thousands of dollars.

Of course, there are trade-offs. The more work you do yourself, the less money you’ll spend, but the more time you’ll invest.

Children’s Book Writing Costs

For many authors, writing costs nothing beyond time.

If you’re writing your own story, your primary investment is creativity, research, and revision.

Potential costs include:

  • Writing software
  • Editing services
  • Critique groups
  • Writing courses or workshops

Estimated cost:

$0-$1,000+

Many self-published authors write the manuscript themselves and keep costs low during this stage.

Children’s Picture Book Illustration Costs

Illustration is often the largest expense when publishing a picture book.

Professional children’s book illustrators may charge anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars depending on:

  • Experience
  • Complexity
  • Number of illustrations
  • Commercial rights
  • Timeline

Estimated cost:

$500-$10,000+

However, if you illustrate your own books, as I do, you can dramatically reduce costs.

For Where Do Pirates Poop?, I created the illustrations myself using Procreate on my iPad.

Children’s Book Formatting and Design Costs

Once your manuscript and illustrations are complete, you’ll need to assemble the pages.

Many authors hire formatters and designers. Others choose to learn the process themselves.

For my books, I use Canva to arrange text, illustrations, and page layouts.

Estimated cost:

$0-$500+

Tools commonly used include:

  • Canva
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Affinity Publisher
  • Microsoft PowerPoint

ISBN Costs

An ISBN, or International Standard Book Number, identifies a specific edition of a book.

If you publish through Amazon KDP, you can use a free ISBN provided by Amazon. Authors who want their own publishing imprint may purchase ISBNs separately.

Estimated cost:

$0-several hundred dollars

Depending on your publishing goals, a free ISBN may be perfectly acceptable.

Proof Copy Costs

Before publishing, I strongly recommend ordering a proof copy.

A proof copy allows you to:

  • Check image quality
  • Verify margins
  • Review text placement
  • Catch errors before publication
  • See how the book feels as a real, physical product

When I ordered my proof copy of Where Do Pirates Poop?, it gave me confidence that everything looked correct before I published the book.

Amazon KDP Publishing Costs

One of the biggest advantages of Amazon KDP is that publishing itself is free.

There are:

  • No setup fees
  • No listing fees
  • No inventory requirements

Amazon prints books only when customers place orders.

Estimated cost:

$0

This makes KDP one of the most accessible publishing platforms available.

What Did My Children’s Picture Book Cost?

Because I already owned an iPad, Procreate, and Canva, my direct publishing costs were minimal.

My primary expenses were:

  • ISBN, purchased as part of a bulk package: approximately $5.75

One thing to keep in mind is that my ISBN cost was much lower than what many authors will pay. I purchased a block of 100 ISBNs from Bowker for $575, which brought my cost per ISBN down to about $5.75. Most authors publishing their first book won’t need 100 ISBNs, so buying in bulk may not make sense. Fortunately, Amazon KDP offers a free ISBN option, making it possible to publish a children’s picture book without purchasing an ISBN at all.

  • Procreate: $12.99 one-time purchase
  • Canva: I have a Canva Pro subscription, but everything used for this project could have been created using Canva’s free plan
  • Amazon KDP setup fees: $0
  • Proof copy and shipping: $8.31

Every project will be different, but creating your own illustrations and handling formatting yourself can significantly reduce costs.

For this particular project, my direct out-of-pocket expenses were surprisingly low. My ISBN cost approximately $5.75, Procreate cost $12.99, and my proof copy with shipping came to just $8.31. Since I already owned an iPad and completed the writing, illustration, formatting, and publishing myself, the total cash investment for Where Do Pirates Poop? was just $27.05.

The biggest investment wasn’t money. It was time, creativity, and the willingness to learn new skills.

Ways to Save Money When Self-Publishing a Children’s Book

If you’re working with a limited budget, there are several ways to keep costs down.

Learn Basic Formatting

Formatting is a valuable skill that can save hundreds of dollars over time.

Even if you eventually hire help, understanding basic formatting will make you a better publisher because you’ll know what to look for in your files.

Use Canva

Canva is beginner-friendly and surprisingly powerful for page layout.

For simple children’s book layouts, especially if you’re creating a print-on-demand book through Amazon KDP, Canva can be a very approachable place to start.

Create Your Own Illustrations

If you’re willing to learn, illustration software can reduce publishing costs dramatically.

You don’t have to be perfect when you begin. Many authors and illustrators improve with every book they create.

Start Small

Your first book doesn’t need to be perfect.

A smaller project can teach you the publishing process without requiring a huge financial investment.

Is Self-Publishing a Children’s Picture Book Worth It?

For me, absolutely.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking an idea from your imagination and turning it into a real book you can hold in your hands.

Self-publishing gives authors creative control and the ability to bring stories to life without waiting for traditional gatekeepers.

That said, success is never guaranteed. Publishing a book is possible. Selling that book consistently is a separate challenge.

Still, the barriers to entry have never been lower. If you’re willing to learn the tools, test your ideas, and improve with each project, self-publishing can be a meaningful and affordable way to bring your children’s book to life.

Final Thoughts

If you’re wondering how much it costs to self-publish a children’s picture book, the answer is:

It can cost thousands of dollars, or surprisingly little, depending on how much of the work you do yourself.

For authors willing to learn illustration, formatting, and publishing tools, creating a children’s picture book can be much more affordable than many people realize.
